Everything is Temporary and Especially the Grave

I was praying over a number of prayer requests where people had lost a loved one. I recalled a Sermon at Harmony Hall Baptist Church where Pastor John Kinsey had stated that everything of and in this world is temporary. He made the point that even the grave is temporary due to the resurrecting power of God. I had heard sermons before this one and afterward on what the Resurrection of Christ meant for God’s people, but this one was special for me. For some reason I have always remembered where I stood as Pastor Kinsey was talking about his pending Sermon at the end of a Bible Study in the Old Fellowship Hall. His words, “Even the grave is temporary.” hit me like a lightning bolt of truth to the brain. That one sentence has stayed with me for years.

Even Grief and Loss are Temporary

Today, I remembered that statement as I was praying for the comfort of those grieving over the loss of a loved one. God helped me understand that our Grief is also temporary. I understood as I prayed that God wanted me to be comforted knowing the time we are here on earth is just a speck of time. Our grief is temporary. Our time apart from our loved ones is also temporary. James 4:14 reminds me we are like a temporary vapor while we are in this world. We have been promised by God, that we will eventually spend the rest of eternity with God and our reunited loved ones.

Grateful Hearts

We can have grateful hearts for the time we did have here on earth with our loved ones. Even if their time on earth was short, we can still cherish that time with grateful hearts. We have not lost them. We are only separated temporarily. God is the God of the living. We will see them again. We just need to be patient as we wait on God’s promises. We can count on God’s faithfulness and comfort while we wait. We do not need to count our losses when we realize there are still blessings coming. Many of the Psalms like Psalm 103 remind us to count our blessings and consider the benefits in knowing God and waiting on His promises. It is actually therapeutic to count our blessings while we are waiting.

Prayer For Comfort

Lord God Almighty, You are faithful and keep Your promises. Please heal my broken heart and deliver me from my misery. Create within me a grateful heart that counts my blessings. We know everything of and on this earth is temporary. I am glad that the graves, grief and separations from loved ones in this world are also temporary. It hurts when we lose a loved one and our heart feels broken. We miss their presence, and we feel miserable sometimes. Please pull me closer to You and allow Your presence and love to comfort me. Help me be grateful for the time I have here on earth with my loved ones. Help me give You my pain, disappointments, regrets and receive Your healing. Help me rejoice in the truth that the time we are apart from each other will be a speck of time compared to what You have planned for us. Help me receive Your truth into my heart and mind as You comfort me. Help me find my comfort in You and share it with others for Your glory. Help me faithfully pray for others that also need Your comfort. In Christ Jesus I pray that we will all praise Your Holy Name for our comfort we have in You. Amen.
